Chap.1 Tom's Draft 10-8-2009
Translation process
First Draft: Tom's draft mainly focused on meaning written for clarity.
Second Draft: John's draft is mainly to work out the phrasing but will also look at meaning.
After others have a chance to comment this draft will go to John as the basis for his draft.
Please add any comments to this draft to improve meaning or phrasing.

Steiner's two examples: "reason of this similiarity" and "conditions of this experience"
There are two sentences in the second chapter of Steiner's book which I do not understand and ask for help:

Collaboration Experiment: Take The Sentence Clarity Poll
This is question 1 of 11 inside.
I think of Meaning and Clarity in translating The Philosophy of Freedom. The first stage is for the writer to become clear of the meaning to be expressed in the sentence. This would require experience and research. The next part is the clear expression of that meaning so that others can understand. That would be decided by the reader. So it seemed to make sense to me to poll the reader to get feedback as to how well they understand a sentence.
Our translation should be clearer than other translations, otherwise what is the point? So polls that compared our work with past translations would tell us whether we are improving reading comprehension.
Both sentences have similar meaning.
Select the sentence that most clearly expresses that meaning to you.
Or select "other" and type in a revised sentence to improve clarity.

Translation Principles
Translation Project: Revise the original 1916 Hoernle English translation for better clarity and to make the text and style more contemporary while maintaining accuracy. This is the only English translation of The Philosophy of Freedom Rudolf Steiner personally authorized and was aware of. The other translations were done after his passing.
