Living The Non-Purposeful Life

Submitted by Dr. Speculation on Fri, 06/12/2009 - 11:21am.

Ever since I was born, it was clear that there was something different about me. However, it wasn't until I postponed my Waldorf teacher training so I could take that Walmart stock room promotion that I realized what it is that makes me unique. You see, I was placed on this earth to put off doing something extraordinary and I won't settle for holding up anything less.

I'm on a different path than most. A path that takes numerous detours until one finds oneself, many months later, back where one first started. Whether it's never finding the time for thought training, pushing aside the urge to start a study group in order to spend more time reading Steiner lectures, or dedicating my life to abandoning the idea of helping those less fortunate so that I might instead attain my own financial security, I take solace in knowing that I was meant to not follow through on something remarkable.

Unlike other people, I know that when I surf the Internet for hours and hours, rather than simply killing time, I'm avoiding doing something truly spectacular. I may not seem like much now, but someday everyone will see that I'll still, more or less, at the same place today as I was 5 years ago.

I have a plan for me. An amazingly vague plan that drags its feet and never really gets going until it's too late.

Well you haven't completely wasted your time then.

You've managed to avoid a Waldorf Teacher training, starting a study group, and doing esoteric exercises. You must be a very humble guy by now. None of those activities garuantees anything in themselves; but they would sure have put you through the spiritual ego mangle if you had done them out of driving yourself to feel virtuous. Keep up the good work and the circumspection. You are living to your potential. Do what you enjoy. You'll always know what that is, because you will have already done it by the time you reflect.
