Is Anthroposophy A Body Of Knowledge Or The Realization of Freedom?

Submitted by Freedom Professor on Sun, 06/07/2009 - 2:46pm.

Anthroposophy is a systematically arranged body of knowledge about the nature of the human soul and spirit, as well as the whole spiritual cosmos.
--dictionary

This would mean the more Rudolf Steiner books and lectures you read the more you know about Anthroposophy.

If someone realizes the act of freedom described in The Philosophy of Freedom, he finds the whole content of Anthroposophy –Rudolf Steiner

This would mean the more you realize freedom in your life the more you know about Anthroposophy.

"about"

let's strive for the day when the word "about" (as used by Tom in his last sentence above) need no longer refer to diagramic knowledge of ancient Lemuria or future Jupitor.  Tom points to something very significant in astutely setting those two quotes side by side.  Rudolf Steiner crafted PoF in such a manner that the quote:

If someone realizes the act of freedom described in The Philosophy of Freedom, he finds the whole content of Anthroposophy

his use of "find" need not have anything to do with the kind of clairvoyance that so many present day anthroposophists think fundamental the Steiner's path of knowledge.

I think there are strong signs that there is a growing stream within the Anthroposophical Movement to begin seeing "the whole content of Anthroposohy" as a formless yet living and direct experience of human nature, an experience that can inform each instant of action and  cognition.  This new anthroposophical stream is already finding clairvoyant research tertiary to the enactment of moment to moment freedom (even those in it who have certain etheric/astral perceptual capacity).  PoF obviates all attachment to form while never disconnecting from humanities inherent and everlasting participation in eternal formation.

If the anthroposophy

If the anthroposophy movement is to be renewed and catch up to anthroposophy itself, some terms need to be redefined. Here is a contribution to a new understanding of spiritual science that opens spiritual science to everyone from JMD.

Anyone with sufficient interest can find the principles of Anthroposophy in my Philosophy of Freedom.

Characteristics of Spiritual Science

With the above quote in mind, I suggest that the key characteristics of Spiritual Science can be described accordingly in a three-fold manner.

  • Spiritual Science has its own epistemology (ie, its own theory of knowledge) that recognises that each branch of knowledge has its peculiar and specific manner of investigation appropriate to its field;
  • ethical or moral stance, namely ethical individualism, that recognizes that each act and situation has to be considered on its own merit; and
  • path of development towards freedom or, rather, the state of 'freehood' that engenders genuine spiritual activity.

These three areas are touched upon in Rudolf Steiner's Philosophy of Freedom.

Two paths

It's just two paths to the same goal.
