I think the important point being made in chapter 1 of POF is to understand the prevalent illusion of freedom. Why seek freedom if you already believe you are free? This writing outline begins with 12 familiar descriptions of freedom and then presents a view questioning the freedom. Then an example of the unfreedom is given. Lastly a step to increase self-awareness and grow in freedom is given.
1-1
Freedom of Indifferent Choice (could have done otherwise)
OR Law of Causality (determined before birth)
Example: Physical Determinism (genetic determinism-body is physical), (neuro-determinism-brain is physical)
Step: motive exists
1-2
Freedom of Choice
OR Compelled By Desire
Example: Behaviorism (they begin with survey of public desires to design campaign to manipulate —economic marketing, political micro-targeting, religious heaven-hell)
Step: discover motive thru introspection
1-3
Free to Express Necessity of Own Nature
OR Determined by External Causes
Example: Nature and Nurture (Biological and Social Determinism)
Step: if you have knowledge of motive it doesn’t compel
1-4
Free From External Impulses (Character)
OR Moral Determinism
Example: Moral education (fundamentalists)
Step: allow motive to influence only after achieving knowledge of it
1-5
Action Result of Conscious Motives
OR Unconscious Urges
Example: Neuroscience- (Libet: power of veto of unconscious urges,)
Step: moral responsibility-- good or bad consequences –( split between knowing-conscious motive and doing-following unconscious urges, knowing doer, real doing needed in addition to conscious intentions)
1-6
Free when Controlled By Reason (Free will means to be able to subordinate a present passion to a life goal)
OR Rational Determinism (rationality: individual's goals or motives are taken for granted and not made subject to criticism, ethical or otherwise. Thus rationality simply refers to the success of goal attainment, whatever those goals may be. Sometimes, in this context, rationality is equated with behavior that is self-interested to the point of being selfish.)
Example: Rationalizing (Libet: make-up reason after decision made unconsciously)
Step:
1-7
Freedom To Do As One Wills
OR Compelled by strongest motive
Example: Psychological Determinism
Step: motives that don’t impel with necessity
1-8
Freedom of Spontaneity (absolute beginning)
OR Animal Instinct
Example: Human lizard brain (concern with survival)
Step: between us and action is a conscious motive
1-9
Knowledge of the Motive (Thinking Activity)
OR Stereotyped Thinking
Cognitive Bias: something that our minds commonly do to distort our own view of reality,If your mind is tethered to any conclusion, to any experience, to any form of knowledge or belief, it is not free; and such a mind cannot possibly perceive what is truth.”
Example: Faith-Based Thinking
Step: recognition of thinking activity, awareness of thinking
1-10
Action Springs from the Heart
OR Emotional Determinism
Example: Following Cults and Prophets
Step:discerning heart, motive entrance,be aware of thoughts within motive
1-11
Compassion
OR Sexual instinct
Example: Infatuation
Step:form idealistic mental picture
1-12
Perception Of Good Qualities
OR Failure to see good
Example: Negative Stereotypes
Step:make MP of good qualities
