ARIES – The RAM
21st March – 19th April

The Light of Life Itself

House:   1st
Hemisphere Position:  Northern / Positive
Polar Opposite:  Libra
Quadruplicity:  Cardinal
Element :  Fire
Colour :  Red
Stone :   The Amethyst

Keywords: Born leader, strong, determined, forceful, aggressive, irritable, energetic – Pioneer.

Goal
Aries is a sign which constitutes both a ‘birthplace of ideas’ and a field of much endeavour and striving, where the impulse of the spirit in overcoming can be triumphant and the intention and will are developed.  The month of Aries is a good time for beginnings, for initiating projects and for cultivating and cooperating with-

Creative activity on all levels
Vision of the goal
Idealism and aspiration
Determination
Will-to-good

Knight Aries
Proper Preparation

To be guarded against: Fanaticism, strife, selfish will, the glamour of power.

Message of the Soul

‘I come forth and from the plane of mind I rule.’

*
TAURUS – The BULL
20th April – 20th May

The Penetrating Light of the Path

Ruling Planet  : Venus (night)
House   : 2nd
Hemisphere Position : Northern / Negative
Polar Opposite : Scorpio
Quadruplicity  : Fixed
Element  : Earth
Colour   : Emerald Green
Stone   : The Hyacinth

Keywords: Strong (weight solid), slow, patient, careful, tenacious, reliable, dependable, possessive – Banker / Finance

Goal
The overcoming of desire and attainment of detachment.  Desire has a primary function in the evolution of man, urging him to put his latent energies into action and develop his faculties.  But it also attaches him to people and things. Satiety and repulsion gradually bring about detachment and eventually liberation and transmutation into illumination.

Knight Taurus
Intelligent Openness

To be guarded against: The tendency to persist to the point of obstinacy, to be faithful and upright to the point of bigotry, and to be over-conservative in ideas and methods.

Message of the Soul:

‘I see, and when the eye is opened, all is illumined.’

*
GEMINI – The Twins
21st May – 20th June

The Light of Interplay

Ruling Planet  : Mercury (night)
House   : 3rd
Hemisphere Position : Northern / Positive
Polar Opposite : Sagittarius
Quadruplicity  : Mutable
Element  : Air
Colour   : Yellow
Stone   : The Chrysoprase

Keywords: Argumentive, self-contradictory, intellectual, emotional, two view points, mood changes, inventive – Influencing.

Goal
The function of fluidity is the great lesson of this sign.  The crystallized, rigid forms of personality must be broken and the bonds of attachment cut, the lower forces must be transformed and transmuted, and the centre of consciousness transferred to ever higher levels.  All this requires a high degree of flexibility transferring consciousness to higher levels and the establishing of soul control.

Knight Gemini
Positive Thinking

To be guarded against: Vacillation between the opposites, diffusion of effort, changeableness

Message of the Soul:

‘I recognize my other self and in the waning of that self I grow and glow’

*

CANCER – The CRAB
21st June – 22nd July

The Light within the Form

Ruling Planet  : Moon
House   : 4th
Hemisphere Position : Northern / Negative
Polar Opposite : Capricorn
Quadruplicity  : Cardinal
Element  : Water
Colour   : Silver Blue
Stone   : The Topaz

Keywords: Caring, sensitive, romantic, protective, home loving, over involved, introspective – Home and family affairs.

Goal
Paramountly creation or expression on the form level, transmutation of sensitivity, resolution of isolation, service to the whole.  The opportunity and form of service of this sign is summarized clearly by the soul’s message.  In it lies opportunity to create ‘a lighted house’ not only on the form level but on higher levels also – a form which will irradiate light, be it a home, an enterprise, a artistic production or the personal life.

Knight Cancer
Extreme Alertness

To be guarded against: The building of a hard shell and withdrawing into it and hiding in it instead of creating a ‘lighted house’ and shining forth its light.  Over-sensitivity; being swayed by mass-consciousness. Rigidity and slowness to move.

Message of the Soul:

‘I build a lighted house and therein dwell’

*
LEO – The LION
23rd July – 22nd August

The Light of the Soul

Ruling Planet  : Sun
House   : 5th
Hemisphere Position : Northern / Positive
Polar Opposite : Aquarius
Quadruplicity  : Fixed
Element  : Fire
Colour   : Orange, yellow
Stone   : The Beryl

Keywords: Strong, independent, masterful, leaders, proud, haughty, patronizing, courageous, honest, loyal - Organiser

Goal
The opportunities with which Leo confronts humanity and for which it provides the necessary energy are mainly connected with –

Development of the individuality.  This leads from-
Collective to individual consciousness,
The will to dominate others into the will to self-mastery,
Personality sensitivity into soul awareness,
Self-assertion into selfless assumption of true leadership and the
sacred trust of right rulership.

Leo offers the opportunity for achieving self-rule and consciousness of the true Self.

Knight Leo
Total Involvement

To be guarded against: Self-centeredness, over-emphasis of personal sensitivity and awareness of the ‘one at the centre’, wrong use of power.

Message of the Soul:

‘I am That and That am I’

*

VIRGO – The VIRGIN
23rd August – 22nd September

The Blended Dual Light

Ruling Planet  : Mercury (day)

Quadruplicity  : Mutable
Element  : Earth
Colour   : Deep Green
Stone   : The Chrysolite

Keywords: Common sense, intelligence, quite, dependable, not leaders, conscientious, neat, careful - Commerce

Goal
Gemini brings the opportunity for achieving harmony between soul and form.  Through silent activity the slow emergence of soul vibration and the eventual expression of soul through form.  The nurturing function of the Mother and the utilization of form for spiritual purposes give a keynote of service; this aided by the stimulus of positive energies, persistence, endurance and continuity of effort.

Knight Virgo
World Service

To be guarded against: Pre-occupation with form, detail and the mundane; over attachment and possessiveness.

Message of the Soul:

‘I am the Mother and the Child. I, God, I, matter am’

 *

LIBRA – The SCALES
23rd September – 22nd October

The Light that moves to rest

Ruling Planet  : Venus (day)
House   : 7th
Hemisphere Position : Southern / Positive
Polar Opposite : Aries
Quadruplicity  : Cardinal
Element  : Air
Colour   : Pale Blue, Pale Pink
Stone   : The Sardius

Keywords: Well balanced, comparisons, peacemakers, hard to make decisions, diplomatic, peace, beauty – Co-operation

Goal
Libra offers the path of choices.  Under its influence we learn to make decision rightly and remain poised between the pairs of opposites with which the path of evolution is beset; life is conducted with some sort of order and balance.  The goal is to establish equilibrium, achieve that point of central stillness at which the decision of the Scales is made.  It also provides the point for reorientation, refocusing and redirection of effort for the next moving forward on to a higher plane.

Knight Libra
Inner Vision

To be guarded against: Indecision, fluctuation, apathy, failure to evoke the will to choose and the follow the way that has been determined upon.

Message of the Soul:

‘I choose the way that leads between the two great lines of force’

SCORPIO – The SCORPION or The EAGLE
23rd October – 21st November

The Light of Day

Ruling Planet  : Mars (day) Pluto (night)
House   : 8th
Hemisphere Position : Southern / Negative
Polar Opposite : Taurus
Quadruplicity  : Fixed
Element  : Water
Colour   : Maroon, Deep Red or Lavender
Stone   : The Sardonyx

Keywords: Unusual, complex, powerful, egocentric, secretive, passionate, dark side - Passions

Goal
Reorienting and transmuting the lower energies for higher purposes.  There are said to be nine tests-

On the physical plane: sex, physical comfort, money
On the astral plane: fear, hate, ambition
On the mental plane: pride separativeness, cruelty

These nine tests confront humanity as a whole as well as the individual, and can take in three stages-
- Recapitulation, the facing and dissolving of all the impressions and tendencies from the past in the light of the soul.
- Recognition of the points of crisis and of the corresponding tests which confront us and their overcoming.  It is worth remembering that the habit of confronting
crisis is long established in the consciousness of humanity.
- Transmutation and sublimation of lower forms into higher energies.  Strength results from testing.

Knight Scorpio
Self sacrifice from the lower Scorpion to the higher Eagle

To be guarded against: Sense of duality and opposition; inherent and instinctual glamours and tendencies are apt to rise up in Scorpio, where the battle between the opposites is joined.

Message of the Soul:

‘Warrior I am and from the battle I emerge triumphant’

*
SAGITTARIUS – The ARCHER
22nd November – 21st December

A beam of directed, focused Light

Ruling Planet  : Jupiter
House   : 9th
Hemisphere Position : Southern / Positive
Polar Opposite : Gemini
Quadruplicity  : Mutable
Element  : Fire
Colour   : Royal Blue or Purple
Stone   : The Smaragdus

Keywords: Integrity, openness, maturity, success, cheerful, enthusiasm, restless, honest – Explorer, Missionary

Goal
Sagittarius is the sign of discipleship and discipline with its energies of one-pointedness, dedication and intuitive aspirations.  It offers opportunity to take control of the lower self, to see the spiritual goal (vision), aim towards that goal and, reaching it, then catch the vision of the next point to be attained.

Knight Sagittarius
High Aspirations

To be guarded against: Over-expansiveness on the lower levels, and over-optimism; attraction to anything new; preoccupation with material pleasures instead of spiritual goals.

Message of the Soul:

‘I see the goal.  I reach that goal and then I see another’

*
CAPRICORN – The GOAT or The UNICORN
22nd December – 19th January

The Light of Initiation

Ruling Planet  : Saturn
House   : 10th
Hemisphere Position : Southern / Negative
Polar Opposite : Cancer
Quadruplicity  : Cardinal
Element  : Earth
Colour   : Dark Grey, Brown, Black or Silver
Stone   : The Chalcedon

Keywords: Natural leaders, confident, ambitious, hardworking, strongwilled, tradition, control emotions - Boss

Goal
Capricorn is often considered the most ‘earthly’ of the earth signs, presenting the struggling soul with an unending up-hill climb it offers continual opportunity to
transcend the form life.  It confronts its subject with supreme challenge and testing, but holds even if hidden, the way to the ‘Light Supernal’ of the mountain top.  Among the special tasks in Capricorn are: the conquest of matter, elevation (of consciousness) and liberation (from the past in order to be free for higher and more spiritual life); the overcoming of pride and ambition, and the eventual experience of the mountain top (illumination).  This last has two aspects:

The experience of utter loneliness and darkness, and preparation is made for this through many lesser experiences of it on the mountain path, the lessons of solitude. Illumination and realization.  But this should not be thought to complete the way; light connotes the overcoming of darkness, and the disciple who reaches the light recognizes the need to return and give himself in service as the message of the soul makes clear

Knight Capricorn
Conscious Control

To be guarded against: Ambition and glamours connected with materialism and achievement.  Over-emphasis of form.

Message of the Soul

‘Lost am I in Light supernal, yet on that Light I turn my back’

 *
AQUARIUS – the WATER CARRIER
20th January – 18th February

The Light that Shines on Earth, across the Sea

Ruling Planet  : Uranus (day) Saturn (night)
House   : 11th
Hemisphere Position : Southern / Positive
Polar Opposite : Leo
Quadruplicity  : Fixed
Element  : Air
Colour   : Turquoise or Golden
Stone   : The Sapphire

Keywords: Complex, strong, charming, quite, well mannered, independent, shocking, altruism, service, creative, non-conformity - Friendships

Goal
Control of emotional oscillation, achievement of stability and balance between opposites, and of right relationship, control of extraversion.  There is a strong tendency for extraversion on all personal levels for those under Aquarius; they are extraverted mentally through their thirst for knowledge, emotionally owing to their sensitivity, strong affections and social sense, and physically through their tendency to act in order to utilize technical means.  Spiritually they also tend to extraversion through their fundamental inclination to serve.  Joy is one of the characteristics which we are promised will be expressed in Aquarius.  It is a magnetic quality and is linked with the emerging consciousness of the whole.  It can therefore be evoked in Aquarius.  But the great keynote of this sign is service, which, in its true sense, is a science consisting of many vary methods and extending not only to humanity, but to the lower kingdoms and also the higher realms. A significant factor in the Solar System and a station of light which will serve not only our planet but the Solar System and the seven Solar Systems of which ours is one. Such are the cosmic vistas of which we can become aware in Aquarius.

Knight Aquarius
Illumined Effort

To be guarded against: The strong tendency towards extraversion and freedom; over-activity; constant search for outer diversion; imbalance between inner and outer life.

Message of the Soul:

‘Water of life am I, poured forth for thirsty men’

*

Element  : Water
Colour   : Pure White
Stone   : The Jasper

Keywords: Gentle, shy, imaginative, aimless, confused, help others, sympathetic - Sympathies

Goal
The special gifts of Pisces are sensitivity, fluidity and liberation.  The tasks it presents therefore include-

Domination and right use of sensitivity, control of fluidity and synthesis of the dualities found in every human being – between head and heart, mind and love, will and wisdom.  Death of forms that bind and limit and the consequent release of the indwelling life; Service – the directed intention to service and recognition of the processes of liberation is the mainspring of the life of service.  Development and right use of the Will.  Liberation and transformation of-

Negativity into positive soul infusion
Psychic sensitivity into spiritual perception
Self-pity into compassion
Self-preservation into detached world service

Knight Pisces
Ultimate Union

The Sun

The Sun Sign
Shows the individuality, indicates the inner ideas, aspirations and reactions some of which may be known to the native and need not necessarily be revealed to others. The Sun Sign provides an index of the creative expression of the personality.

The Moon Sign
Governs the personality – the persona or mask – as they are with other people.

It is interesting to note; the Moon represents our subconscious and it is our subconscious which governs our persona.

The Ascendant Sign
The Rising Sign on the Eastern horizon at the time of birth.  Shown on the left hand side of a birth chart. This point describes the unique character which is coming into being and represents the individual view of the world and the way in which the complexities of the whole chart will relate to the environment.  The Ascendant’s sign’s ruling Planet is said to be the chart’s ruling Planet.  The Ascendant leads our way into the world.  Its qualities denote the individual path that will lead to self-realisation.  The Sun is the kind of hero we are but the Ascendant is the journey that takes us on the hero’s quest.

The Descendant Sign
The Sign descending on the Western horizon at the time of birth.  Shown on the right-hand side of a birth chart.  Opposite to the Ascendant describes our experience of other people, what we want from them, give to them, get from them and project onto them.  Planets in this 7th house will have a major influence on the way we interact with others – what we have to learn, to confront and to enjoy.

The Midheaven Sign
The symbolic point in the sky that was directly overhead at the time of birth. The Sign in the Midheaven symbolizes the height of the worldly success and public position.  The Midheaven also known as the MC represents our aspirations and ambitions and describes the type of career we will seek to develop.  It represents status and self-esteem and the image we want to cultivate in the world.  The way we would like to be seen.  The Ascendant expresses the qualities spontaneously, without self-consciousness or effort.  With the MC we consciously aspire to develop and express the qualities of the MC.  Our MC also describes our experience of authority figures and the ideals, which govern our interactions with the world.

Imum Coeli (Nadir or IC) Sign
The IC describes the inner most and least exposed area of experience – early home life, ancestral influences and the unconscious roots of personality.  This point links us to our personal past and indicates our need for privacy and security and the way we feel about home and family.  The IC is always opposite the MC.

The Moon’s Nodes
Are the two astronomical points where the lunar orbit around the earth intersects with the earth’s orbit around the sun.  The lunar node cycle is 19 years.  The north is always opposite the south and together they represent an axis which relates to important contacts or associations in the individuals life.

The North Node (Dragon’s Head) Sign
Indicates the direction towards which the individual is developing.

The South Node (Dragon’s Tail) Sign
Indicates the patterns of the past from which the individual is moving away.

Retrograde
There will be times when viewed from the earth, a planet will appear to slow down, stop and move backwards with increasing speed.  Then after a while, the planet will slow down, apparently stop and then move forward again with increasing speed.  These retrograde periods highlight important times when unfinished business can be more thoroughly grappled with, and sometimes resolved – it is a pause, reflect and emphasis phase.  Retrograde planets seem to have a more intense and introverted influence.

Aspects
Each planet moves through a cycle of 360 degrees with each other planet.  For example the monthly phases of the Moon-

The Moon is in conjunction (together with) with the Sun at New Moon. It gradually moves ahead of the Sun until about seven days later it is 90 degrees from the Sun – the first quarter, known as the outgoing square aspect – Waxing. Then seven days later it reaches Full Moon when it is 180 degrees or in opposition aspect to the Sun.  At that point it begins to move back towards the Sun and some seven days later it forms the last quarter or incoming square aspect – Waning.  Finally after a total of 28 days it conjoins the Sun again to form the next New Moon.

Major Aspects

0 degree – Conjunction – Simultaneous occurrence of events, coincidence.

60 degree – Sextile – Opportunity, effort, work.

90 degree – Square – Obstruction and antagonism although when properly handled, may lead to spiritual advantage and to creativity or reconciliation.

120 degree – Trine – Luck.

180 degree – Opposition – similar to the conjunction in it brings an intensifying of affairs and throws things in prominence but in a manner that is not always favourable so far as the immediate reaction in circumstances although there can be long term influence that is beneficial from both circumstances and character.

Houses
Planets that rule the house are where their energy’s will be at home.

astrosophy learning more

dear caryn

I have always wanted to learn astrosophy as I feel it could be the final breakthrough in my 14 years of clairvoyant counselling.

So is there anyway I can study it? I am starting by joining your group. I have had a chart done once by william bento but did not spend more than half hour on the interpretation, so would like to understand more.thanks jenny ren.

Astrosophy

Hi Jennyren

How are you and how is Cape Town? We entering our spring rains here in Joburg – it is wonderful breaking the dry winter season.

Astrosophy is a great subject to add and compliment your knowledge.  Astrosophy is an ambiguous term for a rather vast subject which includes mainstream astrology.

Once the foundations of astrology are learnt – the zodiac signs, the planets, the elements, the aspects, progressions & transits etc. – it is possible to take it forward and further where the knowledge becomes active and then maybe this is what we may call Astrosophy.

I am self-taught, years of self study with books on the subject (majority purchased in 2nd hand book shops!) My keen interest is in the zodiacal macrocosm in relation to the microcosm.  I do not do birthcharts - when I do they normally run into 50 pages or so and I take a good couple of months to do it, by hand that is not using a computer – it is huge concentration and I find my connection with the chart and the person becomes quite intense.  I do not do astrology professionally, for a living that is – although it is my living!

Jennyren I would suggest study as much as you can on the subject – starting with the foundations and building up as you go.  Rudolf Steiner takes astrology into the realms of Astrosophy and with astrology foundation knowledge – for example; Libra is an air sign, ruled by Venus, cardinal and positive – adds further depth to his teachings.

I am happy to go through the outline of your chart with you if you like (although it will have to be on-line here) for example; what Libra in Aries in the seventh house expresses. Or if you would like to ask any questions I will gladly answer as best as I can.

Caryn

astrosophy

dear caryn,

yes thank you that was most helpful.I too have bought many books on astrology both new and second hand, and spent nights reading them but found I had to keep rereading them as it took ages for it to sink in that saturn was a particular glyph and so on.

However , I thought astrosophy was very different. I have been to a few lectures on vedic astrology, so I suppose it all ties up together but astrosophy brings in the spiritual dimension.I would be very thankful if you could look at my chart or as I am already 52, maybe the progression or what is happening now might be more appropriate, its just that I feel I am not living to my full potential and want to know how to do that and where to live, and wether to change my work.

anything you would like in exchange for your time and energy...please let me know.thanks jenny ren.

birth place cape town date 01.12.1954 time around 2.10.a.m.

                                                                                                   thank you jenny ren.

Sagittarius

Hi Jennyren

Thanks for the reply - a Sagittarian okay!  A great sign - the Archer who aims towards a star, reaches that star and aims towards another star.  Yes!  the first thing in astrology is learning the glyphs (also known as the symbols or sigils) in this way the signs speak their meanings in symbolic picture form and also it is helpful in shorthand reading astrology.  A birthchart is a good start in 'knowing yourself' and I think should be introduced as a school subject.

Jennyren you mentioned that you have a chart - if you could write out the placements of your chart we can take it further.  This is  - the sign on the ascendant, sign and planet in the 1st house, sign and planet in the 2nd house ... to the 12th house.  Midheaven sign and north and south node sign.

We can have a look at your Jupiter returns which happen every twelve years - and the years between these.

My regards

Hello - Lovely of you to

Hello - Lovely of you to post  this - but aren't the dates wrong for Astrosophy as they use the Babylonian Zodiac  not the tropical Greek.

This was the whole point of Astrosophy that it is constellational not zodiacal in a traditional sense - Using the star constellation you would use the fixed stars and the tropical.  So the dates for say Aries would be Apr 15- May 15- Important because of the nature of the reltionship with the fixed stars.

Isn't this how you learned it?

astrosophy hullo caryn louise

hullo caryn louise,

I have been reading your articles on astrosophy over the past year, and realise I lost our connection somehow.

You kindly suggested I send my chart details, do you mean the western one, the vedic one or the astrosophy one.? I hope I can find the astrosophy one. I shall look tonight but as I had to move once again in december I dont quite know where everything is.

This question of not having apermanent home bothers me so maybe I shouldlook at what I need to do to have that.and then to start trying to do simple astrosophy charts, someone said you need the software, or the permission to use the software. is that right? thanks jenny ren.and I do hope you had a happy easter, I was blessed enough to spend it at camphill hermanus and attend the wonderful easter festival there, including walking to the graveyard under the full moon to place candles on the graves ....with the farm community.

The Zodiac

Hi there,

Apologies for the late reply – have just seen these messages now.  Marlasapothe and Jenny ren (hello there-  sounds like you had a great easter!) you have raised a good question regarding dates and the Zodiac.  From my side I view the Earth as being the centre, the foundation and temple of man. The Zodiac is the First Hierarchy – the Seraphim, Cherubim, and Thrones whom are the Ones closest to the Earth.  So close they make up the human body – the temple of man.

My Anthroposophy teacher is John Jocelyn and Rudolf Steiner in this regard
http://www.philosophyoffreedom.com/node/1712

Dates, dates, dates –

The weaving of the First, Second and Third Hierarchy which makes the temple go around the Solar Sun. They interflow and superimpose this temple of man and it is the Zodiacal Hierarchy whom the Sun enters which gives us our energies for that time.

It is not really my way to go according to dates, the calendar - but rather listening to the energies of the Zodiac as they flow in their celestial cosmic dance.  I can feel the Aries energies now, for example, with the Rays of the Sun shining through this sublime Hierarchy.

I don’t do birthcharts and I don’t follow the newspaper horoscope but I do readily look at my Ephemeris daily to follow the movement of the Hierarchies.

In this case I am not really an astrologer at all!  and hope you don’t find my answer to evasive.  I post this extract which may be of interest-

Symbols of Revelation – Frederick Carter

Pg 24
In the ascent of the heavens the first stage was made by way of the Moon, then by Mercury and Venus to the Sun, after that by Mars and Jupiter, and, last the throne of Saturn, the seventh gate. Once having discharged its responsibilities to these seven who had given to it the garments in which to descend into terrestrial life then the spirit might walk among the further stars of heaven.

Man had made for himself, in fact, a world which grew with root and stem and branch and leaf like a tree. As above, so below, says the Hermetic proverb. He could climb to its topmost boughs; in spirit, at least, he could fly. If in it were seven branches, then its roots were seven, at its foot flowed the stream of life. And on it hung the star cluster like fruit, and the four winds blew on it. At any rate it was alive to him and a marvellous and fine invention; alive indeed, and the veritable tree of life. And so it reacted upon him as a living thing, a semblable. He saw himself as like it.

Not until the Mathematicians had evolved elaborate methods of calculation and checked ever more closely its motions and structure did it lose the sense of a fuller but complementary life parallel to man's own. But the invention of many devices like the Arabic numerals and such conveniences brought in pure mathematics and arid abstractions and prodigies of quantity, number and size, so that all things were pushed away far off each from each and stiffened into
deathly and empty hollowness.

No more could the sun be seen `stationed in the midst wearing the cosmos as a wreath'. That vision had belonged to theology as a fount of poetry. Then he was a god belonging to a great order; he was a ruler in heaven and from the days of old Chaldea, the Lion, Leo, had his royal star.

But in the process of being made efficient, the calendar's practical value had become overwhelming important and with that its ceremonial significance shrank. The priest lost his philosophy and succumbed into ritual forms, the philosopher lost his religious sense, his feeling for a proportionate relation interbinding earth with heaven – and he became caught up in mechanical definitions. Life became uneasy.

Love, Caryn
