Right Speech - Two

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

Today’s speech is, for the most part, devoid of soul and spirit. Our expressions are abstract and few people make the effort required to ensoul words. If we are able to look at evolution as far back as Atlantis we find that language was infused with the will. We wouldn’t see Atlanteans standing around discussing the state of affairs. In Atlantis language aroused the will, so when danger threatened it summoned us to defend ourselves. In pre-Christian times a feeling spirit entered language. Since the purpose of speech was now to name things, the inner nature of things was expressed in the name. If we spoke about ploughing a field the word ‘plough’ gave a feeling of the ploughing. In this present stage of the evolution of language we have lost the feeling content and we have to describe the ploughing because the spirit of thought lives in our speech.

The spirits that guide our speech are the Archangels, the folk spirits. If our speech is empty of spiritual ideals we have no connection with the Archangels. If we engage in abstract speech during the day, at night when we sleep our connection with these beings is lost.

Rudolf Steiner says, “Within language lives the genius of language that is not dependent for its evolution on the decision of man.” It is through the instrument of the Archangels that this evolution takes place.

Try to imagine the interplay of the Hierarchies as evolution moves forward. Archangels don’t manage this alone; they need the assistance of a higher Hierarchy. In Atlantis we arrived at our speech through intuition which arose through the Archangels connecting with the Hierarchy above them, the Exusiai (Elohim), the Dynamis and the Kyriotetes. Then at the beginning of the Post-Atlantean epoch when language took on the feeling element, we no longer utter speech through intuition, now it was inspired. This inspiration came through the teamwork of the Archangels with the first Hierarchy; the Thrones, Cherubim and Seraphim.

Then at the time of Aristotle when thinking entered into our speech there was no higher Hierarchy from which the Archangels could channel the speech forming power. Since now our speech requires imagination they had to go into the past for these imaginations – “what came from an earlier time had to be carried on into the future, there was no longer any immediate and present flow of the speech forming power. In as much as speech now took its source from an earlier stage an Ahrimanic element crept in.” Steiner says, “Language became polished and at the same time paralysed.”

This situation called for the most dramatic action in heaven and on earth. Language could only receive new life through the death of a God in the physical world. The Hierarchy had to experience death; they had only experienced metamorphosis, till now. Golgotha was this moment; the Hierarchy tasted death for the first time and the Trinity was able to evolve and stand outside the Hierarchy. Once again the Archangels could go to a still higher source for the life-giving form of speech.

This closed the gap on Ahriman. However, there is a catch. Now it is up to us to take into ourselves the Christ impulse; only in this way can we give life to our speech. The more the Christ impulse enters into us the more it will also enter into the Archangels, assisting them to get imagination from the present and through the Trinity, rather than from the past. This is why St Paul says that they wait in eager longing for us.

For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God; for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will but by the will of him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and obtain the glorious liberty of the children of God. Romans 8:19-21 RSV

Buddha emphasised Right Speech because he knew that the use of the living word depended entirely on us. Rev Mario Schoenmaker always reminded us that the best possible place to cultivate the living word of Christ was in the Gospels. Understanding the Gospels comes from the presence of Christ himself as he works upon our etheric body. Right Speech therefore points to the living Christ Impulse proceeding from the speech-forming power of the Archangels.

The word has now become flesh; the word is now within us. Through the ruling Archangel, Michael, who represents will-filled thought, we have the power and the freedom to choose Right Speech.

Right Speech

Hi Kristina

Glory to God in the Highest.

This is a wonderful writing you have posted; if we look at John Jocelyn's writings on Aries he talks about the sacredness of speech.  If I may place an extract here from Aries-

‘In the beginning was the Word’.  Man, made in the image of divine beings, is revealed in the speech or word of Aries, ruled by Mars. In the ancient Mysteries, it was disclosed that in virtue of the fact that certain Moon-beings were able to gaze on Mars, the capacity for speech was organized into man’s etheric body.  The twelve macrocosmic signs of the Zodiac correspond to the twelve senses of man.  Aries is correlated with the sense of speech.  The inner dynamics of the organs of speech reside in Aries.  Man’s capacity to regain and to use the ‘Lost Word’ is contingent upon his becoming holy.

As we meditate upon this vernal sign, Aries, we realize how essential it is for man to refine himself in his soul, so that, raising his quality to higher octaves of spiritual power, he can release in his speech Christ-constructive building forces.  Today, speech is prosaic, if not profane, yet language is derived from spiritual sources and should be used as an instrument and power of the wisdom of love and the spirit of truth.  Man needs to regain awareness of the sacredness of speech.

Man, in his full significance and dignity as man, is bound up with speech.  To those who know, the human voice tells all, for it is indicative of the whole character of the individual.  It is the soul that expresses itself in sound, and one who is alive to it, realizes its strength or weakness, its temperament and talent, in fact, the whole coloration of the soul.  The character of a people, likewise, is contained in, and can be known by, the configuration of its speech or language.

The majority attach to a word some common mental image or degenerated concept, which has displaced the original, true concept derived from spiritual sources, and souls imperfectly developed or unbalanced mistake very easily what the word images for them for the actual idea.  Most people today are slaves of the common quality of the spoken language; they fall prey to the vernacular of the day, and become the victims of the tyranny of slogans and dupes also of demagogues and dictators, rather than being exponents of the upbuilding, illuminating spirit of truth.  The destiny and genius of Aries is truth, and the truly balanced Aries soul is content with truth only.

It is in this sign of the Ram that self-consciousness must come to expression, as must a growing power of self-controlled destiny.  In Aries, the animal nature must be tamed and controlled, so that the Christ may take up residence in the soul, for this is the sign of the Sacrificial Ram and of the Lamb of God slain for the redemption of the world, making possible the eventual reunion of the Earth with the Sun.

Love to all.

Michael and his mission fulfilled though collaboration

The following is from one of Steiner's lectures on Michael and seems to fit here:

"Michael cannot fulfill his mission without humanity's cosmic vocation of freedom, individuality, and love.  His great joy is helping those who out of their own free deed enter the ranks of those collaborating in the great work of the invisible."

Best regards
patri

Thank you Caryn, I am not

Thank you Caryn, I am not familiar with John Jocelyn's work and enjoyed reading his wise words. It is through our I AM that we have the ability to speak and the ennoblement of our speech depends on the quality of our connection with our I AM. John's observation about the degradation of speech is directly linked to the lack of understanding about our I AM - which is why I wrote my book I Connecting : The Soul's Quest.

Patri, it is always wonderful to read these gems from Steiner. It is so easy to despair about the news of the world, to be reminded that we have an endless supply of free deeds in our 'pocket'.

blessings on your deeds,

Kristina

The pool of knowledge

Hi Kristina and Patri

When I posted the above writings from John Jocelyn I was thinking - it never ceases to amaze me the pool of knowledge where all streams join into one.  Your book 'The Soul's Quest' sounds a very good read indeed.  Hearty congratulations on this Kristina; I so enjoy your writings here.

A poem written from Atlantis writings;

I Am That I Am

I am that I am, I move upon the face of the waters, upon the Earth and within the heavens of the great cosmic universe. My throne is the heart of the sun through which I manifest my power and give life and light unto my creations. I am the beginning and the end. I live in the hearts of all men and can be plucked as a ripe fruit to give knowledge and understanding to the children of my breath.  I am in the wind and rain, in the fire and the frost and all nature is my house wherein I dwell. Come forth ye reapers and gather in the harvest of my knowledge that the sickness of men may be healed and they may turn again towards my loving embrace.

Lots of love.
