The Economic Life as a Path of Development

Thanks Sebastian for offering to be the guardian angel of this important topic. I recently attended a seminar delivered by Christopher Houghton Budd on “The Economic Life as a Path of Development”. Christopher is an English Economic Historian with a deep understanding of Rudolf Steiner’s ideas about economics and sociology. Till then I had only a smattering of understanding about threefolding. I was delighted to hear Christopher say that the economy will not be healthy until we become conscious of our I-being. This was confirmation that my writings, especially my book I-Connecting, could be a valuable resource.

Weaving the Social fabric

Hello Sebastian, this for sure is a welcome topic and from reading one of your recent posts I particularly liked the quote you shared from your friend Bruce Irvine: "it isn't that we are human beings trying to discover the spiritual, it is actually that we are spiritual beings trying to discover our humanity." I will admit that I too choked back tears when I read the Mandela quote aloud to a close friend. I think you speak eloquently about community and your ideas are shared from the heart. The economic sphere has been a struggle for me in understanding where the balance exists between our individual needs and those of family and community. I have always been quite taken with the ancient 'Inca' approach to 'the social sphere as tapesty'. Weaving the fabric of life.

Most recently at a family gathering one of the younger members, 22 yrs,.entered our discussion on spirituallity, God and the like with a statement, "Yes, but LOVE does not put food on the table" I was taken back as i looked around the room at 3 generations of family from 6 months to 89 years and I could only say, " Of course it does, what you see in front of you are generations of love that have survived depressions, war and what ever else could befall humans, and are gathered for dinner here. I don't think we are all here just for the food alone".  Too often we tend to be bothered about what is wrong with life and often miss out what is right and good. Discussion on community, social and economic spirituality are sorely needed in the times we are now living.

Thanks for the ideas. keep 'em coming.
