my project for today: to see some ways in which Steiner's formulation of "experience" in his epistemology is a good example of what Gendlin is describing in the following quote and how Steiner's formulations might have changed if he had sought the reversal of which Gendlin speaks. The following quote speaks to my project: "We have inverted the ususal philosophic procedure. Instead of seeking certain conceptual presuppositions that determine all experience (and knowledge) we have sought to formulate the function of directly referred-to experiencing in the creation of concepts.

So when I look at Steiner's body of work, I can see that as the years went by he was able to describe his experience of cognition in ways that specified and made more clear its holistic intricacy. Clearly, by the time he wrote "Truth and Knowledge" he had his primary intuition; he wrote very powerful about this intuition in "Truth and Knowledge", "A Theory of Knowledge Implicit in Goethe's Worldview" and "The Philosophy of Freedom". He wrote About it, and to some extent his language participated within his experience. But as the years went by you can read that Steiner was growing and struggling to create a new language for such an experience, and he said explicitly that he could not yet find such a language. So he was living with complicated felt-senses that he couldn't say the way they wanted to be said.

I'm not throwing this one back in the water! And I can't believe I missed it before. I've been collecting statements by Steiner that differentiate and specify aspect of POF that he doesn't state explicitly in the book itself. Many of these have to do with what I've been calling the cognitive edge experience or the felt-meaning. I've got well over 70 solid quotes from Steiner, but this one is solid and gives me a lot to think about. The context is that he is talking about the sense of concept:
